Equipment and Facilities

Laboratories

The Department accommodates more than 250 Pentium IV computers and several Sun workstations. CSE offers the best computing facilities in the university.

Level I Lab: 65 Pentium IV machines are located in the first year lab, where practical classes for all the first year students take place. Practical classes are held in small groups and the students are encouraged to use the computer facilities whenever the premises are free.

Level 1 Lab

Level II Lab: This lab is used mainly for level 2 CSE subjects. It houses 60 machines.

 Level II Lab

CSE Lab: There is a common lab for all CSE students with around 40 computers which are managed by the CSE students themselves. It is your responsibility not to bring in any students outside the department into this lab, as this lab is not constantly monitored by CSE staff. CSE students have a common responsibility to look after this lab.

Advanced Multimedia Lab: This lab is used by students for their audio visual activities especially listening to video lectures.

 Advanced Computer Lab (SMART Lab): This lab is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and it houses 50 computers that are mini-ATX type and have TFT screens.

 Smart Lab

Research Lab: The final year students are allocated a separate lab mainly for project purposes. Each project group is provided with at least 2 Pentium IV machines, but depending on their requirements more computers may be allocated.

This lab was donated to the department by the Microsoft Sri Lanka for learning purposes in mobile computing.

Vision and Image Processing Lab:

This lab supports vision and image processing course units as well as extra exercises carried out by students in these areas.

Lanka Software Foundation (LSF) Lab: Department houses one of LSF’s 3 labs.


All the computers in the Department are Internet enabled.  Internet connectivity is provided through the university network and facilities exist to increase the bandwidth for students or staff with special requirements. Additionally, the entire Department premises were wireless enabled by the end of 2005.

Office of the Head of Department: Ms. Vishaka Nanayakkara, the current Head performs her duties in this room.

CSE Office

CSE Office: The administrative staff of the department is located here. In the very rare case of submissions in hardcopy format you have to hand in those to this office.

LK Domain Registry: The LK Domain registry has a separate office located within the CSE Department.


Systems Operation Centre (SOC): University of Moratuwa mail and web servers and all the servers of the department are located here.


Staff Rooms: Senior members of the academic staff have separate staff rooms. Junior staff shares office space in the common staff room area.

 Lecture Rooms and Other Facilities

Lecture Rooms: Department has a lecture room named which can accommodate 100 students located on the left hand side of the staircase from the lobby of Sumanadasa building. It is called CSLR 4. Department also has two tutorial rooms adjacent to this class room which are used for smaller group discussions.

CSE Conference Room: The conference room located in the staff area is the location for having meetings. You should reserve the room with prior approval from head of department if you want to use that.

CSE Seminar Room: The Department has a seminar room which was upgraded and refurbished by the 1999 group of CSE graduates as a token of appreciation.

CIT Studio: One of the latest additions to the Department. It is equipped with high-tech audio/video recording and editing equipment. It has enabled the Department to create video lectures and other multimedia as enhancements to teaching. It also conducts practical sessions for DE Video Production course. Mr. Sanjaya Sooriyaarachchi is in charge of the studio which comes under the purview of CIT (Centre for Instructional Technology) headed by Dr Chathura De Silva.
